RST controller design for a multivariable three-tank system

Feedforward control with preview for a linear motor

Position Estimation and Control of an Autonomous Vehicle

/webdav/site/la/users/139973/public/photo-project/khep-base.jpgThe aim of this project is to improve the tracking performance of a nonholonomic vehicle, the Khepera robot. To achieve this goal two control structures will be tested.

First, the position (x, y coordinates and orientation) of the robot will be measured on-line by a positioning system based on an external camera. The accuracy of the measurements will be improved using a Kalman filter.

Second, two non-linear controller will be implemented.
– (I) The first will be a classical MPC controller
– (II) The second will be an estimator-based controller using flatness.

The candidate will compare both of these strategies, giving the advantages and disadvantages in term of performance and implementation.

Positioning and control of mobile robots

/webdav/site/la/users/139973/public/photo-project/khep-base.jpgThe aim of this project is to measure the positions and control the distance between two Khepera robots. First, a positioning system based on an external camera will be installed, providing the necessary measurements. Next, a full state controller will be put in place and tested. Both tracking (a predator robot following a pray) and crossing (collision avoidance on crossing trajectories) scenarios will be studied. The work will be carried out using an experimental setup available at the Laboratoire d’automatique. The result of this work will be integrated in the wider framework of autonomous vehicle control.

Control design and implementation

/webdav/site/la/users/139973/public/photo-project/Maglevit.gif The goal of this project is to reinforce control engineering skills by deploying real-time control solutions for two different systems. The first system is a thermal system with transport delay. The second system is a nonlinear magnetic levitation system. The deployment stages include modeling, parameter identification, interactive design (Smith predictor and feedback linearization, respectively), simulation and real-time implementation using LabVIEW and C.

Awareness in remote experimentation environment

Modeling, identification and high accuracy position control of a piezzo actuator

/webdav/site/la/users/139973/public/photo-project/observatoire1.gif In the aim of improving the resolution of the Very Large Telescope Instrument (VLTI) in Chili, by rejecting the atmosphere disturbance on the spatial observations, a mechanical prototype with a nanometer accuracy over the 70 millimeter course is being developed at the EPFL. To achieve the very high specifications, many solutions are explored; one of them is a system with a double stage structure: on the one hand, a Newport positioning table, that has a theoretical precision of 1um, and on the other hand, mounted on the Newport stage, a fine positioning piezzo actuator, that has a theoretical nanometer accuracy.
The complete structure is supposed being able to follow a reference trajectory at a very high accuracy over a range of 70 mm up to 200 Hz.

Therefore, the project we propose is a part or submodule of the complete prototype analysis:
(1) Complete modeling and identification of the piezzo actuator,
(2) Developing an adequate optimal control algorithm.
The availability of the prototype give the student the opportunity to measure, implement and test the algorithms in real conditions.

This project is proposed in collaboration with the observatory of Geneva and with the European Southern Observatory in Munich.
